This position is designed as a working student program with the focus on developing young dressage professionals and equipping them with skills needed to succeed in the industry. A minimum of 3 private lessons a week from the trainer, daily riding and weekly supervision of lesson teaching skills are among the benefits of the program. Bringing your own horse to develop is encouraged. Other areas of learning include discussions of equine nutrition, an opportunity to work with top professionals in supporting fields such as farrier, saddle fit, body work and an opportunity to handle a wide variety of horse breeds. There is a large emphasis on the theory and proper riding position required to develop into a top professional as well as other life skills such as mental health, physical fitness, healthy habits that all help on the road to success. The working student is a one year position with a potential second year as an assistant trainer depending on the skills, interests and compatability with the program. They will work alongside another working student to fulfill the responsibilities of horse prepping and after care, feeding, turnout, blanketing, tack cleaning and all wellness requirements. Stalls are not part of the job description.

This job is located in upstate NY all year and is a small program of typically around 12 horses in training. The small size is intentional and allows for excellent attention to detail and a family atmosphere with amazing and supportive clients with happy horse athletes.

This is a live in position offering a stall for one horse and a stipend plus respect and attention to your learning and needs. Working students work 5 and a half days a week (to prepare for the reality of a life with horses); one weekday morning and one weekend day off.

Requirements

Team player, good communication skills, upbeat and friendly attitude, willingness to learn, minimum of first level dressage skills. US Citizen or legal working papers required.

16 stall barn with a full-sized indoor with excellent footing located in Central NY. The head trainer (Michelle LaBarre) is classically trained through the FEI levels. All horses are in a training program and the trainer is known for focusing on correct riding position and careful understanding of conformation to help riders and horses achieve their best.
